Meet John Jurkin, Senior Business Development Executive

One of the newest members of the Health, Human Services, and Benefits team, John Jurkin sees a lot of great opportunities coming up for himself and for MicroPact.

You’re very new to MicroPact—how did you find your way to us, and how is it going so far?

You’re right, I just joined in MicroPact in August. It’s going well—the transition has been relatively easy because I knew Stephanie Kuhnel, the Vice President for the Health, Human Services, and Benefits portfolio, from earlier in my career. We’d stayed in touch, and we agreed that I would be a good fit for this role supporting the HHS&B portfolio.

I’ve previously held roles at IBM, SAS, Boeing Australia, and other organizations which have given me a background both in technology and in sales to the federal market. And, after my 20 years of service in the United States Navy’s Submarine Force, I’ve also been a user of Veterans healthcare services. So I’m familiar with the markets that I’ll be serving from a number of different angles.

And you believe that MicroPact offerings are able to serve that market well?

I do. The entellitrak platform is really phenomenal. There are a lot of places to go with it, in areas of healthcare and across the board. It is especially compelling for government agencies because it hits a sweet spot between COTS solutions and “do it yourself” strategies that doesn’t overburden an agency’s IT department.

What do you mean by that?

Well, almost everybody would like custom software, but the tradeoff is that it is costs more and takes more resources to maintain than something that comes out-of-the-box. You have to commit to keeping your custom solution current and adapting to all of the other technology you use, updating it for every new API and interface. Maintaining a legacy system can be a huge drain on the IT department.

On the other hand, if you do buy a COTS solution, you may not get all of the functionality you want. Or you may end up having to retool all of your processes to fit how the solution works.

The entellitrak platform threads that needle. We do an excellent job of allowing clients to configure the platform to do exactly what they need it to, following the processes they prefer, without having them stuck in code.

That flexibility is really important.

It really is. I’m excited to show clients not only that it is easy to start and to scale with entellitrak, but that it is perfect for changing your business processes as new needs come to life.

Speaking of “coming to life,” what do you like to do to recharge your batteries away from work?

For relaxation I teach martial arts. I hold the rank of Black Belt in Hapkido, Kumdo (Korean sword) and I’m a 5th Degree Black Belt and senior instructor of Tae Kwon Do.

I’m also involved with Habitat for Humanity. I’ve been a build volunteer locally in the Chapel Hill, North Carolina area, and I’m looking forwards to my first international build trip over the holidays. Our team is traveling to Rayong, a coastal province in eastern Thailand, to help build houses.
