More Than Gratitude for Our Nation’s Veterans

On November 11 each year, we pause to show our gratitude for the men and women who have served in our nation’s Armed Forces. But what can we do beyond saying “thank you” to show our appreciation for our veterans?

There are approximately 18.6 million American veterans of military service, many of whom are or will be eligible to receive benefits during their lifetime. And there are many different benefits that they may need. Consider that just one agency within the Veterans Administration, the Veterans Benefits Administration’s Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment agency (VBA VR&E), provides such far-ranging services as Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment services; Educational/Vocational Counseling; the Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance Program; and the Children of Vietnam Veterans and Other Veterans – with Spina Bifida.

For all of these programs, there are steps involved in ingesting, establishing, and processing eligibility. The individuals working with our veterans are often overwhelmed with administrative tasks, taking away their focus from providing services that the veterans need.

One way to show appreciation for veterans is to make sure that the agencies that facilitate their benefits are equipped to provide what they need. Modernized, automated solutions can help ease the administrative burden on our agencies, helping them to help veterans more effectively. New technology reduces the likelihood of missing paperwork, and helps stop veterans from falling between the cracks when it comes to the services they’ve earned.

A social media post, a handshake, or a sincere word of thanks to a veteran are all respectful, appropriate ways to celebrate Veterans Day. Providing benefits efficiently is a way to honor their service all year.
